“WE CAN MAKE IT”, an “time capsule” about peace

1997 Code Red album "Scarlet".

“We can make it if we try, love like our’s can’t be denied...”

That’s a fragment of the lyrics to the song “We Can Make It” from Cod Red which is a special single for the Asian continent, which is found on the Scarlet album. This year, this song turns 25. I first listened to this song in September 2022, when I read the biography of the late Aldarisma, one of the female singrs lined up by a boyband that mysteriously broke up in 2001 to collaborate on this song. I haven’t listened to this song in a long time (The first song I heard was from a VCD, but unfortunately the cassette got flooded. Hear this song again during a nostalgic music program one night in 2015).

Previously, there were 2 versions of the video clip in this song, one of which was filmed in a residential park (or maybe at the night market?), then there were pedicab paddles and a fried rice seller. And one more version recorded in the studio. But it’s a shame, the channel that uploaded the video clip died 9-10 years ago.

There is a YouTuber from India named amithava1988 (old user) who said that at first the lyrics of this song were only about romance, but when the UNO came to India to see Code Red and Asha Bhosle singing this song, the UNO requested Code Red and Asha Bhosle to promote this song as world peace song.

In Indonesia, this song received a big response from young music lovers at that time. Aldarisma (who was still 14 years old at the time) witnessed Code Red’s performance at the Hard Rock Cafe Jakarta in April 1997, but instead she was offred to sing with this “gang”. Passing the test, her vocals then appear in this song. From 28th August to 4th September 1997, Code Red did a promotional tour for the album Scarlet in various locations in Indonesia, and the tour sparked controversy, when Code Red performed at Disc Tarra Mal Taman Anggrek, there was a stampede that claimed lives.

This song is often played on private radio broadcasts every day (including Pro 2 RRI) around 1997 to 1999, but at this time, this song is rarely played.

To be honest, the song that became the “time capsule” that I  finally opened after 25 years ago is full of meanings about peace and love for fellow human beings. At the end of this article that I wrote to commemorate Human Rights Day which we commemorated last 10th December, let’s absorb the meaning of this song, not only about romance as young people said at the thime, but this song is suitable for the current situation where riots, racism, even mutual insults occur. LET’S MAKE LOVE FOR FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS COME TRUE.
